New Technologies are a powerful tool to tackle the unmet social and environmental challenges of the 21st century: education, access to healthcare, security, urban development and transportation, to name a few.

CALSO aims to bridge the gap between new technologies and social impact so that technology innovation can benefit each and every individual, including disadvantaged populations.

In partnership with 3M, we launched Tarmac TX, a one-of-a-kind accelerator for technology startups developing a product or service addressing some of the most pressing social and environmental challenges of our times. Based in Austin, TX, our 9-month program offers selected startups free support services, including a co-working space, events & workshops, mentorship and networking opportunities in both the Tech and the Social ecosystems.

Jack is the founder of Aquasprouts, a startup that combines fishkeeping and hydroponic gardening. By circulating the water from your aquarium through the garden’s bed, the AquaSprouts Garden recycles fish waste to provide vital nutrients for growing plants, leaving the water clean and clear without the need for additional filters or frequent water changes.

“We’re very glad to be part of Tarmac TX. It’s very beneficial to meet new startups that are also in the same position, looking for funding and for mentorships. Having access to 3M mentors and being able to use them as a sounding board to get new ideas has been without a doubt very valuable. We really enjoy being part of a bigger community that’s doing social impact in Austin."

Tarmac TX provided them different resources such as pitch competition trainings, mentors, speakers coming every week sharing about their experiences, their struggles, and their expertise.

Austin is a brilliant hub for all things but there aren’t a lot of social impact programs dedicated to startups. It’s great to be able to see such a good program coming out dedicated to social impact, education, environment, you name it."

Karyn is the founder and CEO of Care2Rock, an online platform that offers one-on-one online music lessons via live video with superior teachers who are changing the world. In addition to teaching paid lessons on the site, instructors volunteer to teach one child in foster care for free for a one year period.

“We believe music has a huge power to educate children and develop their creativity. Through our platform, we allow underserved children to have access to free, high-quality music lessons, thus enhancing their chances to be successful in life."

Karyn joined Tarmac to find a community of people that were in the same situation and to find mentorship opportunities.

"I really enjoy Galvanize as a co-working space, all the mentorship that Tarmac provides is incredible, and more than anything I like the other startups in the cohort. It’s really motivating to be working with such incredible entrepreneurs.”
